Obituary

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 15, 2017 at the First Baptist Church of Collins for Halbert R. Walker, 83 of Collins, who passed away on Wednesday, April 12, 2017 surrounded by his loving family at the University Medical Center in Jackson.

Reverend Jeff Walker and Reverend Joseph Bird will officiate at the services with interment to follow in the Collins City Cemetery with military rites at graveside. Special music will be provided by Mr. James Arrington Goff. Billy M. King-Colonial Chapel Funeral Home in Collins will be in charge of the arrangements.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Friday, April 14, 2017 at the Billy M. King-Colonial Chapel Funeral Home in Collins.

Pallbearers will be Jacob Walker, Cole Breland, Shane Breland, Scott Jennings, Greg Kelly, Greg McDonald, Bob Shoemake, Brian Wilbourne, and Tom Brooks. Honorary pallbearers will be the City of Collins Mayor, Board of Alderman, and Employees, the members of the Scott Buffington Sunday School Class at the First Baptist Church of Collins, and employees of Colonial Chapel Funeral Homes.

Mr. Walker was born on October 8, 1933 in Pontotoc, Mississippi. He retired from Hess Oil Corporation as a terminal manager after thirty seven years of service. Mr. Walker was presently serving as City of Collins Alderman for Ward 4 since 1997, and was on the Board of Directors for the Mississippi Municipal League since 1998. He also worked as an assistant funeral director at the Billy M. King-Colonial Chapel Funeral Home for the past twenty years. Mr. Walker was a member of the First Baptist Church of Collins and was active in the Scott Buffington Sunday School Class. He proudly served his country in the United States Army. Mr. Walker also served as a volunteer fireman for the Collins Volunteer Fire Department for twenty three years.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Loy and Ethel Holiday Walker; his wife of fifty one years, Rachel Murphree Walker; his daughter-in-law, Julie Jennings Walker; two sisters, Elaine Brock, and Gladys Vaughn; and one brother, Herbert Walker.

Survivors include one son, Jeff Walker of Brandon; one daughter, Cindy Walker Breland and her husband, Shane of Brandon; two sisters, Mildred Harvey of Mount Olive and Becky Hardin and her husband Bobby of Madison; four grandchildren, Jacob Walker and his wife, Teresa, Jordan Walker, Cole Breland, and Emily Breland; one great-grandson, Elijah Aaron Walker; and a host of nieces, nephews, and other family members.

The family request that memorials be made to Grace Baptist Church Positive Action Ministries, 250 Value Park Drive, Brandon, Mississippi, 39042 to provide food, nutrition, and medical care for babies in Haiti.
