Hershel "Bubba" Crosby

December 24, 1947 – August 30, 2022

A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, September 12, 2022, for Hershel Crosby, 74, of Tohatchi, New Mexico, who passed away on Tuesday, August 30, 2022, in Gallup, New Mexico. Services will be held at the Billy M. King-Colonial Chapel Funeral Home, 3302 Highway 49, Collins, Mississippi. Reverend Glenn Shoemake will officiate at the service with interment to follow in the Crosby Cemetery in Seminary.
Mr. Crosby was born December 24, 1947, in Seminary, Mississippi, where he grew up. He attended Seminary Schools and joined the US Army, where he served with the 281st AHC in Vietnam. Hershel received numerous medals and honors for his service in the Vietnam War. He earned his Associates Degree at Jones Community College and a Bachelors Degree in Business Administration at The University of Southern Mississippi. Hershel worked numerous jobs before starting his career in government service with the Department of Defense in Dallas, Texas. He then went to work with the Bureau of Indian Affairs in Gallup, New Mexico, before going to work for the Central Office West with the Department of the Interior in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where he finally retired after a very successful career. After retirement, he relocated to the Navajo Reservation in Tohatchi, NM, where he lived the remainder of his life.
Hershel loved camping, fishing and spending time outdoors. He loved traveling all the back roads, especially in the mountains, and taking the most scenic routes available. He loved a great adventure and knew how to create special memories that will last a lifetime for his family. During his career, he had the opportunity to travel to all of the central western United States, including Alaska. Hershel was known for his humor and being a jokester. He always had the best stories and loved talking about his time growing up in his large family. He also loved reading scriptures, especially the Old Testament, and talking with others about his faith.
Hershel was preceded in death by his parents, Harrison and Winnie Jones Crosby; two brothers, Harry Crosby and Aaron H. Crosby, Jr.; one sister, Margaret Crosby; and ex-wife, Carmen Taylor Sandifer.
Survivors include his wife of 21 years, Joann Benallie Crosby of Tohatchi, NM; three daughters, Mollie (Kendrix) Gildersleeve of Purvis, MS, Rebecca Crosby of Purvis, MS, and Oriel (Chris Bradley) Lucero of Albuquerque, NM; a son, Bryan (Jerilyn) Lucero of Isleta, NM; six grandchildren, Avery and Carter Gildersleeve of Purvis, MS, Bradi and Kellyn Lucero of Isleta, NM, and Mia and Ruby Lucero of Albuquerque, NM; siblings, Jack (Iris) Crosby of Seminary, MS, David Crosby of Eastabuchie, MS, Freddy (Wanda) Crosby of Eastabuchie, MS, Steve Crosby of Seminary, MS, Mollie Crosby Bullock of Seminary, MS, and Hilda Crosby Parker of Seminary, MS; and a host of nieces and nephews.
