Obituary

Homer Horace Higginbotham passed away peacefully on March 18, 2026 at Veteran Care
Home in Collins, Mississippi at 86 years old. You may have known him as Homer, Slim, or Mr.
Higginbotham but to us he was Dad, Papi, Grandpa, Uncle, Brother, and Friend.
He was born in Mashulaville, Mississippi on April 17, 1939 to his loving parents, Joseph J. and
Margurite Higginbotham who preceded him in death.
He joined the United States Army, leaving his home in Mississippi at just 18 years old. Dad
always knew he wanted to see what more there was outside of his small town life. He spent
close to 6 years in the Army, earning the rank of Corporal before his honorable discharge from
service. Throughout his service Dad got to see parts of the world he had only read about in
books while serving his country.
During his time in the Army, Dad was stationed at Fort Buchanan, Puerto Rico. He embraced
the culture, learning Spanish to better communicate and build a life there. Over the next 30
years, he raised his family and worked his way up from a sanitary worker to an Operations
Manager for Rice Growers of America, later Pan American Grain in Puerto Rico. He returned
home to Mississippi in 1995 to be near his family, continuing his hard-working legacy as a
successful business owner.
Dad's life represented a steadfast commitment to family. Family was at his core, and those he
loved drove him to work hard to supply them with opportunities that were often out of his own
reach. Dad spent every waking moment working for his family and he was our number one
supporter. If we needed him, we could always count on his support and listening ear.

Dad is survived by his wife, Carmen; his children, Maggie, Cris, Kimmy, and Daniel; and his
extended children. He also leaves behind 17 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-
great-grandchild.
He loved westerns, with Louis L'Amour and Zane Grey among his favorites. Dad loved movies,
the good ones and the bad ones, and he knew exactly when they were bad, even if you didn't.
He loved ice cream, and if his grandkids wanted to join, the more the better. Dad loved a good
laugh and a spirited debate, especially if he knew he was right.
Above all, Dad was a simple man from the country, bound by a purpose to provide for his family.
He lived up to that purpose every day, providing wisdom, support, and love.
A life can't be so easily summarized, least of all a life well lived. Dad lived a full life, a good life,
and he will be utterly missed.
He will be honored by his family through a private celebration of life. In lieu of flowers the family
asks for a donation to his favorite cause, Saint Jude's Children's Hospital.
