John Hayes Powell

(January 21, 1970 – October 12, 2025)

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 16, 2025, at the Mount Olive Methodist Church in Mount Olive for John Hayes Powell, 55 of Brandon, who passed away on Sunday, October 12, 2025, at the St. Dominic Hospital in Jackson, MS.

Reverend Steve Parten, Reverend Adam Day, and Lay Leader Bill Blain will officiate at the services with interment to follow in the Oakvale Methodist Church Cemetery in Mount Olive.  Special music will be provided by Mrs. Debbie Johnston, Mr. Randy Williams, and Mr. Michael Gibson.  Billy M. King-Colonial Chapel Funeral Home in Collins will be in charge of the arrangements.

The family will receive friends from 5:00 pm until 8:00 pm on Wednesday, October 15, 2025, and from 12:00 noon until service time on Thursday, October 16, 2025, at the Mount Olive Methodist Church, 211 North Main Street, Mount Olive, Mississippi, 39119.

Pallbearers will be Chris Leonard, Chris Berry, Ryan McGuffee, Keith Lofton, Dale McLemore, and Trey Crawford.  Honorary pallbearers will be Ty Clardy, Cliff Kelly, Bodie Sartin, Greg Fort, Mark Leonard, and Walter Rimmer.

John was born on January 21, 1970, in Hattiesburg, Mississippi to Homer Hayes Powell and Ann Chain Powell.  He was a graduate of the Mount Olive High School Class of 1988 and earned a bachelor's degree in pharmacy from the University of Mississippi.  John is the co-owner and operator of C. & C. Drugs and Gift Shop in Collins. For the past decade, John faithfully served the Collins community with exceptional professionalism, integrity, and compassion.  John's dedication to his patients, his colleagues, and the pharmacy profession set a lasting example of what true service looks like.  Beyond his role as a pharmacist, John was a trusted friend, mentor, and neighbor whose kindness touched countless lives throughout Covington County and beyond.

John was a member of the Pinelake Church in Brandon.  He was a loving son, husband, father, and brother and will be greatly missed by all that knew him.

He was preceded in death by his father, Homer Hayes Powell.

Survivors include his wife of twenty-six years, Elizabeth Leonard Powell of Brandon, MS; two sons, Reece Hayes Powell and John Murphy Powell, both of Brandon, MS; one daughter, Caroline Elizabeth Powell, and her boyfriend, Ty Clardy of Brandon, MS; his mother, Ann Chain Powell of Mount Olive, MS; his in-laws, Henry and Judy Mayfield Leonard of Mount Olive, MS.; two brothers, Charles Powell and Bill Powell, and his wife, Cherie, all of Mount Olive, MS;  two sisters, Lisa Powell Sartin, and her husband, Bodie of Heath, TX., and Lyn Powell Fort, and her husband, Greg of Hernando, MS; a brother-in-law, Chris Leonard, and his wife, Leigh Ann of Hattiesburg, MS.; a close family friend, Becky Smith of Houston, TX.; and a host of nieces, nephews, other family members, and friends.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to the Orphan Care Adoption Fund, 6071 Highway 25, Brandon, Mississippi, 39047.
