Mary Crawford
Petty
June 14, 1939 – July 31, 2022
The youngest child of Lee and M.L. Crawford, Mary Ennis, has been called home. She joins her sister Joyce, and her two brothers, Kenneth and Milford, at their final resting place.
Growing up as the youngest child in Mount Olive, MS led to a special treatment by her Mama and Daddy Lee. She was a blessing to her family and continued to be a blessing to all lives she touched during her 83 years.
Like her big sister Joyce who was born on a holiday, Mary Ennis was born on Flag Day, June 14, 1939. She tagged along, helping with childhood chores, which usually meant tending to the animals. Graduating from Mount Olive High School in 1957, she took off to college, just like her older siblings. She attended Hinds Jr College in Pearl, MS.
Mary and her college sweetheart William (Bill) Fowler Mitchell were married and reared their four kids in MS, LaPlace, LA and later moved to Metairie, LA. While still in college, Mary and Bill would drive back to Mount Olive on the weekends to work the family Crawford dry cleaning business. While Granny Gee kept 2 young kids, Mary and her husband dropped off and picked up laundry, running in to all kinds of stories to tell along the way.
In Metairie, she enjoyed Cajun and creole cooking, but always came home with her kids to Mount Olive whenever she could. When her kids grew up, Mary and Joyce took their lifelong dream trip to Hawaii. Mary shared funny stories about the many road trips with her best friend, Gloria Currence. Oh to be a fly on the wall!
Mary's greatest joy was being a mother to her four children, Cindy, Bill, Kim and Vanessa.
Her 2 nd joy was being a mother to all the animals fostered, adopted and loved throughout her life. It seems the pets understood her. She even had her favorite cow, 40, taking to cheese crackers.
Working hard to raise the children, Mary spent most of her working career at Sears in Metairie, LA. She also worked at Fabrixx and met many good friends along the way.
At home, Mary had a walk in closet collection of VCR movies for a fun weekend. When she wasn't watching a movie, you'd find her with a book or a crossword puzzle in her hand.
Never one to worry about the small stuff, Mary was first to lend you a hand, even when she needed it the most.
Her infectious laugh and sincere southern hospitality will continue in Heaven and will be kept alive through her children, their spouses, grandchildren, and great grandchildren, and all those who called her "Mawmaw". The circle remains unbroken.
The family thanks all that helped during Mary's final days, including Oschner Hospital staff, and Serenity Hospice for their compassion, the pet visits, prayers and care for Mary.
To honor Mary's wishes, a Friday evening visitation will be held at Mount Olive's Colonial Chapel Funeral Home from 5 to 7 pm, August 5 th . A graveside service will be held at the Williamsburg Methodist Cemetery, Collins, MS on August 6, 2022 at 10 am.
