Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, February 11, 2017 at the First Baptist Church of Collins for Ruth Onolia Shoemake Lewis, 90 of Collins, who passed away surrounded by her loving family on Wednesday, February 8, 2017 at the Magnolia Place in Sumrall.
Reverend Chad Macdonald and her grandson, Mr. Brandon Esser will officiate at the services with interment to follow in the Collins City Cemetery. Special music will be provided by her grandchildren, Kristen Lewis Leath and Justin Esser. Billy M. King-Colonial Chapel Funeral Home in Collins will be in charge of the arrangements.
Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Friday, February 10, 2017 at the Billy M. King-Colonial Chapel Funeral Home and will continue from 9:00 a.m. until service time on Saturday, February 11, 2017 at the First Baptist Church of Collins.
Pallbearers will be her grandsons, and great-grandson, Justin Esser, Matt Esser, Brandon Esser, Jason Leath, Jake Leath, and Chris Barnhill. Honorary pallbearers will be the staff, employees and residents of the Magnolia Place, and her hospice nurses, Savannah Hill and Jamie Ford.
Mrs. Lewis was born on March 13, 1926 in Collins, Mississippi. She retired from the medical clinic of Dr. W.E. Folse after thirty years of service as his office nurse. Mrs. Lewis was a devoted member of the First Baptist Church of Collins where she was active in the Elizabeth Watkins Sunday School Class and The Joy Club. She was also very involved with the Covington County Chamber of Commerce serving on numerous committees, volunteering at the Mississippi State Veterans Home, and enjoying social activities with the Collins Red Hat Society.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Fed and Ruth Lightsey Shoemake; her husband, John Edward Lewis, Sr.; one sister, Jeanette Shoemake Fillengane; and three brothers, Vernile Shoemake, Granville Shoemake, and Fenton Shoemake.
Survivors include one daughter, Arlene Lewis Esser and her husband, Bryan of Hattiesburg; one son, John Edward Lewis, Jr., of Aiken, South Carolina; five grandchildren, Justin Esser and his wife, Jennifer, Matt Esser, Brandon Esser, Kristen Lewis Leath and her husband, Jason, and Cassie Lewis Barnhill and her husband, Chris; nine great-grandchildren, Austin Esser, Caleb Esser, Aubrey Esser, Maddie Esser, Kaity Leath, Jake Leath, Cole leath, and Kayley Barnhill; and a host of nieces, nephews, and other family members.
