Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 18, 2021 at the Billy M. King-Colonial Chapel Funeral Home in Collins for Stann Q. Smith, 71 of Collins, who passed away on Saturday, May 15, 2021 at the Baptist Medical Center in Jackson.
Reverend Timothy Beard and Reverend Sammy Napier will officiate at the services with interment to follow in the Bethel United Methodist Church Cemetery in Collins with military rites at graveside. Billy M. King-Colonial Chapel Funeral Home in Collins will be in charge of the arrangements.
Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 18, 2021 at the Billy M. King-Colonial Chapel Funeral Home in Collins.
Pallbearers will be Russell Beasley, Shad Harvey, Tony Puckett, Nick Verner, Joey Ponder, Eric Banks, and Layne McLaurin. Honorary pallbearers will be Ike Reynolds, Rayford Sanford, Charlie Sokovich, Jessie Jones, and Bobby Wayne Mooney.
Stann was born on January 24, 1950 in Meridian, Mississippi to H.E. and Wavel Norris Smith. He was a graduate of the Collins High School Class of 1969, and then proudly served his country in the United States Navy. He then graduated from the Mississippi Law Enforcement Academy and started a life-long career in law enforcement. Stann worked with the Collins Police Department and the Covington County Sheriff's Department for thirty plus years. He served as the Covington County Sheriff for sixteen years from 1996 -2004 and from 2012 – 2019 before his retirement in December of 2019. Stann was a member of the Bethel United Methodist Church.
Stann was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, and brother. Through his dedication and love of public service, he encouraged many deputies and dispatchers to pursue a career in law enforcement. He was a friend to all that knew him and will be greatly missed.
He was preceded in death by his parents, H.E. and Wavel Norris Smith; a sister, Gail Smith Anglin; and a brother, Ted Smith.
Survivors include his wife of forty-five years, Patty Vinson Smith of Collins; two sons, Eric Smith, and his wife, Kerri of Palmersville, Tennessee, and Brett Smith, and his wife, Rhonda of Collins; one daughter, Tori Smith Martin, and her husband, Derek of Sontag; ten grandchildren, Kaden Smith, Briley Smith, Kinsley Smith, Breelyn Smith, Avery Dedeaux, Axl Dedeaux, Brett Gray Smith, Jr., Ty Barnes, Taislyn McPhail, and Haley Martin; one brother, Lynn Smith, and his wife, Kay of Collins; a sister-in-law, Debbie Smith of Collins; a brother-in-law, James Earl Anglin of Collins; one half-brother, Glenn Smith; two half-sisters, Murlene Ware and Shelby Barnes; and a host of nieces, nephews, and other family members
