Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 27, 2022 at the Billy M. King-Colonial Chapel Funeral Home in Collins for William Woodrow "Bill" Carter, Jr., 74 of Laurel, who passed away on Saturday, January 22, 2022 at the Mississippi State Veterans Home in Collins.
Reverend David Grayson will officiate at the services with interment to follow in the Springhill Baptist Church Cemetery in Laurel with military rites at graveside. Billy M. King-Colonial Chapel Funeral Home in Collins will be in charge of the arrangements.
Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 26, 2022, at the Billy M. King-Colonial Chapel Funeral Home, 3302 Highway 49, Collins, MS 39428.
Pallbearers will be Ethan Worthington, Tony Johnson, Johnny Hill, Travis Johnson, Ronnie Carter, Russ Freeman, Jose Montes, and Stacy Webb. Honorary pallbearers will be Kirk Royals, Tim Bass, Jim Bass Jr., Glenn Ray Harris, Donald Carter, and Ronnie Windham.
Mr. Carter was born on February 17, 1947, in Laurel, Mississippi to William Woodrow Carter Sr., and Bonnie Windham Carter. He graduated from R.H. Watkins High School in 1965 and attended Jones County Junior College. Mr. Carter earned a barber's certificate and license from Hinds County Community College. He proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corp. and earned numerous medals throughout his military career. Mr. Carter retired from Laurel Police Department as a law enforcement officer after numerous years of service. He also worked for the Jones County Sheriffs Department and the Ellisville Police Department during his law enforcement career. Mr. Carter was a member of the Trinity Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William Woodrow Carter Sr. and Bonnie Windham Carter; his wife, Brenda Johnson Carter; and one grandson, Will Carter.
Survivors include one son, William L. "Chip" Carter, and his wife Markell; three grandchildren, Zeke Carter, Zach Carter, and Ziva Carter; one brother, Richard C. Carter, and his wife, Donna; four nieces, Taja Burleson (Marcus), Stephanie Byrd (Grady), Sheree Brown (Mike), and Britney Martinez (James); and a host of great nieces, and great nephews.
